I was booked in to Gregynog by for a week in May by my employers, so while I had not done any research on the accommodations myself I was expecting the usual "good enough for work" level of accommodation. Unfortunately Gregynog let us all down massively. My room was a "Heritage" room within the hall itself, and can best be described as "institutional". It was clearly once laid out as a multi-person dormitory but had been converted to a single room by throwing a single bed in to one end. The "glorious" view out of the sash window was only slightly marred by the view of randomly fallen roofing slates, some which were very fresh looking. The most concerning issue however was the "DO NOT DRINK" warning over the cold tap in every room, which meant the only source of potable water was an ominous unlabelled bottle left on the bedside table, with no indication for when the bottle had actually been placed there. Also, the room contained wooden block to stop the door opening too far, unfortunately said block was the exact same colour as the rest of the floor, so was effectively a booby trap for visually impaired visitors or at night due to the only light switch for the room being near said door and no lamp provided. During my blessedly short stay, the main problems I encountered with the actual accommodations were 1) A metal bed slat pushing through the bedspread and scraping across the back of my leg. 2) A shared shower who's floor seemed to be home to a biological experiment, and was the only functioning shower across two floors of the building 3) Shared toilet facilities that varied from "not terrible" to "dystopian nightmare" depending on which part of the hall you were staying in 4) A strong and pervasive smell of damp and "mustiness" across the entire building, even in the more expensive "courtyard" en-suite rooms. This smell somehow clung to clothes and had to be washed out. 5) Radiators that were either locked to fully on, fully off or rooms with no radiator at all. 6) No instructions were given regarding gaining access to the rooms after hours. In fact, when I left the site at 6:30am on a Monday morning there was no way for me to re-gain access to my room as the front door locked immediately behind me and none of the keys supplied would open the door. As for the rest of the stay, the staff seemed very uninterested in providing any help or assistance to guests, and seemed utterly shocked that most of the guests left the very next day never to return. I hate to think how much my employer paid for this group booking, but I ended up arranging accommodation at my own expense to avoid staying there any longer than necessary
Visited with friends for a walk. Beautiful day and beautiful grounds. Lots of walking, well worth a visit. The cafe had been recommended but unfortunately was let down by surley/grumpy staff. Coffee and snack over £6 with not the cheapest but ok. What I did not expect was paper cups , and food in paper boxes. No choice. I ordered a toasted teacake and did not want to try and butter it in a small cardboard box so had to ask for a plate. No offer of crockery for the coffee. I thought it was because we were eating in the courtyard but no everyone was being given paper cups. Staff brought the teacake out but just looked so miserable and grumpy. They really need to up their game. Given a choice I prefer Erddig cafe!
As locals, we visit this area multiple times a week to enjoy the circular walk, and we have regularly chosen to stop at the café for refreshments. However, we have decided not to return to the café moving forward due to consistently poor service. On our last three visits, we experienced unreasonably long wait times of approximately 30 minutes just for a simple toastie or sandwich order. Despite the café not being overly busy during these visits, the service remained very slow, and staff did not seem attentive or proactive in managing orders. Given the high prices of food and drinks, we would expect a much higher standard of service. It’s disappointing to see such a decline, as this could otherwise be a convenient and pleasant stop during our walks.
The main building is filled with intricate wood paneling, artwork and an extensive book collection. The grounds are magical - extensive and perfect for old and young alike to explore. A sweet little cafe with friendly staff and yummy small bites selection in a courtyard setting makes this place ideal to celebrate a special day or spend a quite afternoon.
The cafe at Gregynog Hall has beautiful grounds and lovely walks, but the cafe itself was a bit underwhelming. The large, open space felt empty, especially as we were the only customers, and it could really use some music for atmosphere. Service wasn’t great—we had to repeat our order three times before it was correct. The food, though basic like soup and toasties, was tasty. The place has potential, but the staff could definitely benefit from better training and people skills.
Visited for a walk and some lunch at the cafe. £3 to park, even if you use the cafe. Cafe menu is so limited it is untrue. I tried to find the menu online before we visited, but it is not available online. It is also expensive for what it is. Food (toasties) comes in a cardboard box - not even a plate when you are eating in. Coffee comes in a disposable cup. Not really sustainable. no options of even a jacket potato. Someone really needs to look at this and the reputation is it getting, it could generate funds. Also, if you do go to a music recital there, why are you still expected to pay for parking when you have bought a ticket for the event. No info on website re access for disabilities and parking charge still applies. Won't be going back, despite being local.
Beautiful location with a terrrific Easter Trail. Children receive a map, a cake and a drink as part of the deal. Great value and thoroughly enjoyable. Best breakfast naps ever. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean toilets. Wonderful summer programme. We’ll be back SOON.
Great place to walk your dog, big area. Little muddy but what do you expect in November in Wales! Mixture of road, woodland and grass walks. Lovely little cafe, the cheese scone was delicious! Thank you!
Grounds are nice and had one of the nicest pieces of carrot cake ever but the lad making the coffee needs to be trained how to make coffee.. literally can’t have ever been shown as if he was guessing!
