点评:We visited in UK half-term week, which also coincides with what they know locally as Romanian ski week. Needless to say it was busy...
Before the detail on that - The ski areas themselves are pretty good. It's not a huge area, but plenty to keep you busy for 5 days say. Lots of easy blues, and some wider steeper reds, and a few mogully steep reds that may or may not be to your liking, And if the weather's great the views from the top of the two higher lifts are gorgeous , you look down on Bulgarian forests , towns, and lower slopes sometimes through some low cloud. A lot of the runs converge on Blue number one , so it gets horribly busy at the bottom of that, where people of many abilities converge as well.
When leaving, you have the option of the gondola queue (not as bad as the up queue) or taking the ski road, which is an extension of piste #1 really. This is a reasonable run technically, although shallow and narrow in places, and can vary from decent to icy to slushy as it descends over 1000m, and also the sheer numbers make it a little stressful. Boarders, skiers, walkers, sledges, people of all speeds and abilities descend at the end of the day rather than get the gondola. Accidents are common, but it's probably OK for intermediates if you keep your wits about you!
Perhaps all this was worse than usual when we visited, due to the half term UK crowds and Romanians. And if you can get up there early enough you can have some great runs in the morning. But that's the issue..
We tried various methods of getting up the mountain, gondola one day (1.5 hours), private taxi (100 lev, 1 hour), gondola again (2.5 hours), official minibus (12 lev each , 1 to 2 hour queue) , and self drive - which would have been good I think, but just before we got to the base of the road the police closed it to everything except "official" taxis and mini buses. (and if you talk to any locals in Bansko you'll know why I wrote it like that.)
The road up is crazy, it's a standard 2 lane road but minibuses and taxis drive past long queues on the wrong side and then cut in when traffic comes down. Apparently this is standard practise for minibus and taxis, but not really allowed for normal cars, but plenty of people break this "rule" causing even more chaos.
The gondola queue is pretty soul-destroying, especially when you see people pushing in ahead of you, and also when you know that the gondolas are also serving the fast-pass VIP lane at the back of the station, for people who've paid 100LEV per person for a day, or paid to get in that route via other methods ( personal ethics allowing).
We really liked Bankso town (old and new) and you can see the new restaurants and bars, and apartments being built all over but they really need to sort out the infrastructure, as currently there's an imbalance between the capacity of the mountain and the expectation of the town.
Top tips would be:
+Visit a little early if you can, before the craziness starts.
+If you drive up, go early.
+Stay in one of the hotels that provide the VIP gondola pass.
+Get a plastic reloadable ski pass on your first day (rather than paper) and only reload on the day. Then charge it up online as you need it. (One day we spent so long getting up there we only needed a half-day pass when we got there)
