点评:Where do I begin? Our 14 night journey (myself and my sister fit and adventurous 70 and 63 year olds) through southern Ethiopia exceeded our expectations in so many ways. We wanted a mix of wildlife and culture and the independence of our own vehicle, driver and guide. Awaze Tours made it all possible. Habte was flexible and helpful at every stage of planning the itinerary. Our driver Hope Michael is an absolute gem and so careful on the often long journeys and bumpy roads, helpful, patient and generous with his time, knowledge and advice. On our 5 day trek through the mountains of Bale National Park we were guided by Jamal, an exemplary guide whose knowledge of wildlife greatly enhanced our experience. He was also caring and funny and along with cook Abu and two helpers who also took care of the pack horses did everything to look after us well. Abu’s skills on a one burner stove produced extraordinary meals! Thanks to Jamal’s eagle eyes we enjoyed sightings of twelve Ethiopian Wolves, Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Olive Baboons, Warthogs and zillions of shy Grass Rats. Steppe, Tawny and Verreaux’s Eagles, Augur Buzzards, Lammergeier, Lanner Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, Blue-winged Goose, Ruddy Shelduck and many other birds. The mountain landscapes were extraordinary: bleak but beautiful, sweeping views, incredible columnar basalt formations, amazing flowers including fields of helichrysum everlasting flowers and red hot pokers. Evenings were chilly and we huddled round a camp fire, night time temperatures dropped to minus 6 Celsius and we needed every item of warm clothing (merino wool, down jacket, hat & gloves) we had brought. The camping equipment was good and just about coped with the cold nights though one of us brought an extra camping mat for comfort. We struggled with the altitude even though the trekking per se was not arduous. Taking it slowly was the way to go. Good to know that there are no campsite facilities - it is wild camping in the true sense of the word. Not a problem for us. Over the 5 days we didn’t meet another traveller - the whole experience felt very special. For the second part of our trip we were guided by Abaya who worked tirelessly to give us a unique and fascinating experience of the Omo Valley tribes. We had so many memorable moments with the Dorje, Ari, Mursi, Hamar and Karo people…. It is humbling to witness their lives and the ingenious ways they cope with a harsh and challenging environment. Abata was an amazing ‘fixer’ constantly arranging and rearranging things behind the scenes so that we would get the best experience of these different cultures. He’s a fantastic communicator and facilitator! The road journeys were long but always interesting- so much to see along the way. Thank you Awaze Tours for an amazing experience. A final note - if you plan to bring binoculars and long camera lenses you will need a special permit - make sure you ask Awaze to apply for this more than two weeks in advance.
