点评:Arriving at Fukuoka International Airport on a chilly Wednesday morning in December, I had no firm plans as to what to do on this first day of a 3-day visit to Kyushu. Whilst I had a definite plan to visit Dazaifu and Yanagawa in the following 2-days, I was undecided as to whether to spend the day sightseeing in Fukuoka or to take the JR train out to Karatsu, where I’d seen there was an interesting looking castle marked on the JR map. Erring towards the former as the easy option, I purchased a 1-day Subway Pass (Y640), deposited my case in a locker at the Airport subway station (K-13) and headed towards Meinohama (K-01), at the opposite end of the Subway Airport (K) Line. To my surprise the subway train I boarded at the Airport, continues all the way through to Karatsu on the JR Chikuhi Line. It appears that in the morning (up until about 10 am), and in the late afternoon/evening (from about 4 pm), through trains (jointly operated by JR and Fukuoka Subway) provide a regular service to Karatsu. On the spur of the moment, I decided to continue on to the final destination and paid the excess fare for the JR leg of the journey (Y860) at the gate in Karatsu.
Arriving in Karatsu about 11:30, my 1st port-of-call was the Tourist Information Centre (adjacent to the North Gate of the newly rebuilt JR Karatsu Station), to pick-up a ‘Karatsu City Map’. I would recommend that you begin your walking tour of Karatsu at the ‘Hikiyama Exhibition Hall’ (temporarily relocated to Arpino, next to the JR Station). From there, head northwards up the street opposite Arpino to the ‘Former Karatsu Bank’, then on to the ‘Karatsu Shrine’, the ‘Former Takatori Residence’, and finally a walk along the beach towards ‘Karatsu Castle’ itself. All of these places are worthy of the 5-star reviews they receive individually, and demonstrate that collectively, Karatsu is more than just a Castle.
