Superb Experience in a Seclude and Beautiful Bay
Giant Clam Sanctuary的点评
点评：What an amazing experience, and excellent ecological efforts here. This is literally a small shallow bay on the south side of the island, reached via Cross Island Road from the Cruise Terminal (we hired a car from Budget Car Rentals). When you arrive, there is only a small wooden shelter manned by two guys running the sanctuary. It's just 20 Samoan per person to enter the bay, and you can hire a snorkel, mask and flippers for another 5 Samoan if you need them.
The giant clams were settled here over 15 years ago, when they were already 14 years old, and are now over 1m wide and 30 years old. There is a single flag in the centre of the roped off area of reef which indicates where to swim to to find the clams. Don't think the ones on the outer edge of this area are the giant clams. They're nothing compared to the Giants when you reach the flag. Best not to put your feet down and definitely don't try and touch them as once they've closed up around a limb you'd have trouble getting it to open again.
The water is very shallow and calm so not to difficult to navigate out to the clams if you're a confident swimmer. Even before the roped off section there are plenty of fish and rocks to see snorkelling around the bay. Once you've finished swimming there is a shower and toilets available included in the price to rinse off before you leave. It's not luxurious but it serves the purpose. The two guys are really friendly and very helpful.
It's a really beautiful, unspoiled part of Samoa as well. There were no other visitor there at all for the duration of our stay.
