点评:We boarded the first JR train from Utsunomiya and exited at the JR Nikko station around 45 minutes later.
The station was small but a little busy with other visitors. Luckily I bought our Nikko pass on line so we immediately fell into the bus queue (outside the station on the left side) and waited for the first one to arrive. The buses pick up here first before the Tobu station so definitely try to come to Nikko via JR or walk the short distance from the other station.
Just outside the station was a well frequented set of bathrooms. I did not use the visitor center.
Heading back to Utsunomiya just required a standard train ticket. We noticed a sign later that evening that informed travelers that there were no more reserved seats left on trains heading back to Tokyo. For those day trippers definitely buy round trip tickets.
The gates for the tracks don’t open until around 10-15 minutes before departure, so we just stayed in the waiting area. Once the train pulled up and the emptied out we were one of the first on board to grab a seat. It was standing room only by the time we departed the station.
