点评:Crossing Pyrmont Bridge is a fun thing to do if you’re exploring the Darling Harbour/Cockle Bay area.
The historic swing bridge was built in 1902 and is now heritage-listed. It’s a lovely, long, wide bridge and is pedestrian and bike only so you can safely stroll along.
From the middle, you get a lovely view over the harbour and marina, with Darling Harbour on one side and Cockle Bay & Barangaroo on the other side. You can also look down over the the historic ships out the front of the Maritime Museum. It’s a great spot to take photos and kids can run freely here.
Some historic features have still been retained. Halfway along, there’s the original control cabin, perched on stilts. From here, the bridge was manually opened and closed, allowing tall ships, steamers, yachts and the ferries pass underneath.
When it was built at the start of the 20th century, the bridge was considered a marvel of modern engineering. This was because it used an engine rather than using steam power or a winch.
For those with an interest in this art of thing, it’s one of the oldest surviving electrically operated swingspan bridges in the world.
NOTE: For those with mobility issues or pushchairs, there is easy access via a lift at the CBD end.
