点评:There is of course, more than one monument at Omaha Beach but this TA entry refers to the large stone memorial which is known as a ‘Signal Monument’. It stands on the Omaha beachfront promenade (and is not connected with the Cemetery).
It is one of a series of 10 Signal Monuments which are markers of key WWII D-Day locations along the Normandy coastline.
If like us, you are spending some time exploring the D-Day beaches and surroundings WWII sites, you will likely see more of them
Each of the 5 D-Day landing beaches has at least one signal marker. Of the five, Omaha was the bloodiest with the largest number of casualties, - at least 2,400 casualties in one single day.
The first of these monuments was erected quickly in 1950, just a few years after the war had ended. When peace finally arrived, there was a strong drive to commemorate the sacrifices of those who had fought.
They are heavy, solid looking, stone structures and were designed to look like the stern of a ship arriving at French shores.
Their weight and solidity gives a sense of permanence. Perhaps after two world wars, people needed to feel that this new peace was forever.
Each signal monument has a simple but different inscription. Prominently carved lettering, in both English and French, reads, “The Allied Forces landing on this shore which they call Omaha Beach liberate Europe – June 6 1944”.
Behind the Omaha Monument, the sea and sand stretch into the distance. Immediately behind, you can see the steel wings of the modern abstract memorial, Les Barnes, rising out of the sand.
NOTE: Many of the photos and reviews below are about the Normandy American Cemetery but this is a different TripAdvisor listing. If you are planning to visit the cemetery, it's more helpful to look up this listing separately as it has over 5,900 reviews.
