I arrived on a Sunday morning to take part in the Top Gun experience which was purchased through Virgin Experiences. All communication with the centre had been great and Amanda had been very helpful in finding me a weekend slot which required me to pay a weekend surcharge.
When I went into the simulator, it was completely different to what I was expecting. There are no wrap around screens as shown in the photos on the websites of both Virgin Experiences or the Flight Sim Centre and just a flat, projected screen on the wall.
I was told how to climb into the cockpit and once I had, I was then given a VR helmet. I was given the choice of starting in the air or on the ground. I opted for the ground as I was looking forward to going through the startup procedures as stated on the website. This consisted of me pushing forward on the throttle and taking off. None of the controls or switches in the cockpit were used other than the pedals, control stick and throttle. Amanda was very helpful but the experience was nothing like what is advertised. At the end of my experience, I was told "we dont have any Top Gun certificates left but I have something I think you'll like" and i was handed a certificate to say I had completed an F35 simulator experience.
I emailed the Flight Sim Centre a few days later to give some feedback on my disappointing experience and was told that I would have to take it up with Virgin as I was their customer and advised that the Flight Sim Centre had asked Virgin repeatedly to update their page with correct info and images. I did this and the response from Virgin was that they have concerns as they had only had a couple of update requests over a period of years which had been actioned. They also noted that the images they had on their page were the same as those advertising the experience on the Flight Sim Centre's own website and there was no mention of VR.
The experience that is advertised is very misleading. I expected to be flying in a fighter jet cockpit with wrap around screens, utilising the controls and switches to run through start up procedures and get in the air. What I actually got was 60 mins flying a commercially available game in VR.
