点评:I recently visited Island Spa & Sauna in Edison, NJ, expecting a peaceful and rejuvenating experience, but it turned out to be more exhausting than relaxing. Having been to that multi-level mega spa in Edgewater, NJ, I had hoped for a more affordable but still high-quality alternative. Unfortunately, Island Spa fell short in almost every category—from overcrowding and lack of facility management to indifferent staff and poor guest experience.
While weekends are naturally busy, Island Spa was packed to an overwhelming degree, making it difficult to enjoy any of the amenities. The study pod seating areas were filled with teenagers doing homework, the café was overrun with office workers bringing in their laptops to work unpaid overtime, and the so-called relaxation areas felt more like a waiting room at an airport.
The living room-style lounge, which should have been a peaceful escape, was instead packed with people watching TV shows, scrolling through their phones, or reading books aloud in groups. The lack of noise regulation was frustrating—unlike the multi-level spa in Edgewater, where staff actively enforce quiet zones, Island Spa had no one ensuring a tranquil atmosphere.
The men’s bathhouse had some serious problems. First, people were openly using their phones and texting in the locker room, which is wildly inappropriate in a spa setting. This kind of behavior should be strictly prohibited for privacy reasons, but Island Spa had no staff enforcing any rules. Unlike at Edgewater’s spa, where phone use is actively policed, guests at Island Spa were left to do whatever they wanted, making for an uncomfortable environment.
Additionally, there was only one toilet in the men’s bathhouse, which was always occupied. When I asked about another option, I was told there was a second toilet at the entrance of the spa—but I’d have to put my socks and shoes back on just to go use it. That was incredibly inconvenient, especially for a facility of this size that sees such heavy foot traffic.
The lack of hospitality was another major letdown. Staff members were indifferent, disengaged, and at times outright inattentive. Many seemed more focused on chatting with each other than assisting guests, and it was clear that customer service wasn’t a priority.
At the café, I waited over 20 minutes for a coffee, only to have to remind them myself—and instead of a sincere apology, I was met with a casual “oops, my bad.” This kind of carelessness and lack of attentiveness made the entire experience feel unprofessional.
Island Spa’s layout is also surprisingly small for how many people it attracts. The entire spa is just one floor, which means everything feels cramped and congested. Unlike the multi-level spa in Edgewater, which has spacious relaxation areas and diverse amenities, Island Spa feels more like a bathhouse struggling to accommodate too many people at once.
Other facility-related disappointments included:
No massage pools, which is a huge letdown for a spa of this size.
The “cool room” was barely cold, making it ineffective.
The canteen was inexplicably closed from 3:55-5:00 PM, right when guests would expect food service.
The café didn’t even serve regular coffee, only offering espresso and Americano variants, which felt like an unnecessary limitation.
I came in the morning so this wasn’t an issue for me but when I stepped out in the evening I noticed everyone was fighting for parking. While Island Spa does have parking, finding a spot during peak hours is a major challenge. The spa shares its lot with HMart, multiple Korean BBQ restaurants, Paris Baguette, Kura Sushi, a dental office, and various other Asian eateries, so competition for spaces is already intense.
During Saturday late afternoons, parking is especially difficult, and with no valet service available, guests are left to circle the lot and hope for an opening. This is another area where the Edgewater spa is superior, as they at least offer valet parking to ease congestion.
Instead of offering a peaceful escape, Island Spa & Sauna felt chaotic, overcrowded, and poorly managed. Even though it had a high proportion of Asian patrons, which I initially thought would make for a more comfortable experience, the lack of structure, poor customer service, and complete disregard for noise control made it far less enjoyable.
If you’re looking for a true spa retreat, I’d strongly recommend visiting the multi-level spa in Edgewater instead. The service, noise regulation, amenities, and overall experience there are far superior.
Island Spa might work for those who don’t mind a more casual, noisy bathhouse atmosphere, but if you’re expecting tranquility, high-end service, and a properly managed facility, this is not the place.
Island Spa & Sauna
Island Spa
