点评:Having previously visited (and been hugely impressed by) Charles Jencks 'Garden of Cosmic Speculation' near Dumfries, and 'Jupiter Artland' in West Lothian, I was keen to see what he had done to this former opencast coal mine - and once again I was hugely impressed. You don't need to understand or appreciate the cosmic aspects to enjoy something that is simply very different to anything you will see elsewhere. Land art and sculpture at its best, with hundreds of standing stones and circles - but man made and fairly modern - and I felt as if I was on Lewis, Orkney or Shetland.
It was a beautiful day when we visited, which helped - but I could still enjoy it in the rain !!
Toilets and parking on-site, snacks and drinks available at the 'Coalface' kiosk (where we met a friendly and helpful Brian), lots of picnic tables/benches, dog-friendly (with bins available as you explore). Footpaths pretty good, with some hills/slopes too (not too steep nor high). Some parts might not be great for prams or wheelchairs. Only a mile or so from Sanquhar with cafes, bars, hotels, shops, castle ruins, museum, tolbooth, riverside walks - and what looks like an excellent children's playpark nearing completion.
We'll be back again and will recommend it to others too.
