点评:On Götaplatsen, Göteborg's cultural hub at the end of the Avenyn boulevard, the eye catcher is a fountain with a 7m high bronze statue of Poseidon, the ancient Greeks God of the Sea. It is the work of renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles, who changed his family name from Andersson, when living in Paris.
The Poseidon Statue was unveiled in 1931, the year Carl Milles went to live with his Austrian-born wife for two decades in the United States (near Detroit). The statue doesn't have the classical Greek proportions and the ironic expression on the face of the God has nothing to do with what one knows from antiquity. It is said that the sculptor had modeled it after a person he knew.
The naked God is holding a shell in his outstretched left hand and a water spraying fish in his left. In the water basin are several other sea creatures of the fantasy, variations of tritons and mermaids. The same goes for the reliefs around the wall of the water basin, that show the vivid imagination of the artist.
