点评:Not exactly a hot touristy site, Nokalakevi is worth visiting if you're interested in history. The site has layers upon layers of it : excavations have shown occupation from 8th century BC, then Roman. Byzantines knew this place as Archæopolis, from where they successfully defended Mingrelia against Sasanian, Persian attacks. When walking through the main entrance, you can clearly identify the fortifications as they were built and improved by consecutive occupying forces.
I was enormously privileged to get a personal tour from Dato, who is the archaeologist currently working on site. He showed me around the "Forty Martyrs Church", explained the frescoes, then took me through the "Secret Tunnel" down to the Tekhuri River. There is a lot left to be excavated and discovered, so this is an ongoing project.
