点评:No visit to the Barossa is complete without a visit to the Seppelt Family Mausoleum at Seppeltsfield. About to celebrate the 100th year after building in 1927, the grand Doric style of building certainly dominates the drive and can not be missed whilst driving.
Built by the Seppelt family whose story began all the way back in 1849, after Prussian emigrant Joseph Ernst Seppelt left his tobacco, snuff and liqueur factory with his wife Johanna, children, factory workers and 13 other local families. After settling in the Barossa, the original plan was to farm tobacco. That did not happen – wine did instead with Seppelts wines gaining international recognition over the years. The construction of the first fine cellar was completed in 1867.
Another sidenote that during the time of the Great Depression, the now iconic 5 Kms Avenue of 2,000 Canary Island Date Palms was propagated on site and established. The story goes palms was planted provide work for their employees and feed their families.
There are over 30 interments in the Mausoleum which is no longer open for public viewing. When visiting, remember this is a private mausoleum and needs to be treated with respect.
Parking is on the other side of Seppeltsfield Rd from the Mausoleum, with care needed when the crossing the road. The view up the inclined path to the grand staircase leading up to the Mausoleum is stunning. The incline is reasonably steep with good walking shoes a necessity. The views over Seppeltsfield from the apron of the Mausoleum are stunning and well worth the trek.
Travelling to the Barossa, then add Seppelt Family Mausoleum to you list of places to visit. You will not regret it.
