点评:We had a perfect afternoon on a sunny but chilly day. We were given a great welcome by Lucy and introduced to our guide Rod who was brilliant throughout. He took us on a woodland walk following the river to one of the tea plantations on the Tregothnan estate.
At the tea plantation (see attached photo) he explained all about the growing of tea and the stages of producing the end product. During our visit (in mid March) the first shoots were just showing which then develop over the next couple of months. To hear all about the process from an experienced guide who was such good company was a joy.
The setting of the plantation is spectacular with a rare, even unique microclimate which enables the tea plantations to thrive.
After the walk back to the Reading Room in Coombe we were treated to a wide ranging tasting of teas produced by the estate. Again, wonderfully organised with great care to ensure we had the best experience.
The tea is extremely good, so different from the supermarket products, and we enjoyed stocking up with produce. An added bonus was the opportunity to buy Kea Plum jam which is a rare thing (the trees grow only on certain slopes even in this location). Superb flavour.
Even though the whole visit takes about two and a half hours the time flew by thanks to Rod’s good company and the novel things he was describing. A five star experience and highly recommended.
