点评:We self drive for a visit to Tromso Arctic Reindeer and it was a gorgeous day. We enjoyed all the activities; the price is very high for the experience. I know Norway is expensive so you have to decide yourself if this one is worth it.
The experience is exactly as described ("long" reindeer sled, feed reindeer, warm meal, Sami culture). Hospitality here was absolutely excellent. Warm and friendly and interested in letting guests have a good experience. After an introduction to the sledding and feeding, they divided us in groups for the activities.
We took the reindeer ride first. It's a bit silly. You are in sleds in a big chain and the reindeer pull you in a little circle around the fenced property. Very similar to a pony ride at a state fair for little kids. But still something we could not otherwise experience. Then we were able to feed the reindeer herd from buckets. That was cute and a new experience and akin to a petting zoo type experience --you hold your bucket and the reindeer munch the food (pretty slowly). They can be a little pushy with each other so you do need to be attentive to their antlers lest you get knocked with one (it wouldn't hurt, I was more concerned one would hook into a flap or pocket on my jacket). If you have a small kid with you keep a sharp eye. The antlers could easily be at a kid's face level, and that would be potentially dangerous. And use awareness yourself--one aggressive reindeer kept jumping on two people as if to hump them. Reindeer are, luckily, smaller creatures than you might imagine (think small soft cows) so it's easy to push them away of something negative if happening. But we had nothing negative at all while feeding--they were very sweet.
After feeding the deer we ate our hot meal. Reindeer or vegetarian stew. Both were delicious and plentiful. There were also plenty of hot drinks (hot chocolate, coffee, and tea).
Finally we gathered in the lavvu to learn about Sami culture from two Sami women. This was our favorite part because it was really informative and we learned so much that we didn't know about. It was especially lovely to hear them demonstrate joiking.
