We were in town for a long weekend and discovered the Key Lime and Hot Stuff store on Treasury Street after seeing an ad on Page 19 of the St. Augustine Sightseeing Map & Guide. I was intrigued with Chocolate-Dipped Key Lime Pie on a Stick; my husband is a fan of hot sauces. A marriage made in heaven to find one store that offers two very different products in one location especially on a blistering hot day in the city.
This is kind of a duplex store: one side is devoted to sauces,
the other to key lime products, infused oils and vinegars, accessories, wines, jams, jellies, spices, dressings, rubs, pickles, Tortuga Rum Cakes, citrus cookies, whole bean island coffee, marinades, seasonings and wine under the broad banner of "Gourmet Specialty Foods."
If you are into sauces and peppers, this is the place for you. The store boasts " the largest selection of HOT sauces in St. Augustine and the best selection of imported aged balsamic olive oil and vinegar" and is home of the datil pepper. You can also grab a beer while taste testing the sauces.
The datil pepper was new to us and we learned that it is a green to yellowish aromatic hot pepper mainly produced and grown in St. Augustine. A home-grown pepper! It's an extra hot chili (100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville scale) and similar to a habanero with a sweet, fruity flavor. It is believed that indentured servants from Minorca, Spain introduced the seeds to the city in the 1800's.
If hot sauces aren't your thing, then don't miss the Key Lime Pie on a Stick flown in from Key West from Kermit's Key West Lime Shoppe. This delectable 3.5 oz. Belgian chocolate-dipped treat was worth the walk to discover the store. Addictive? Yes.
This is a very cool shop (literally) filled with everything hot, spicy and sweet. Be sure to stop by on your next trip to St. Augustine.
