点评:Fishguard's Thursday market is a traditional weekly market that runs every Thursday in the Town Hall. Its market charter dates back to 1836 and it's been going ever since!
Traders come from not just the local area but further afield too. There are two traditional butchers selling a range of fresh and cooked high quality meat, raw and cooked, including ham, bacon, sausages, meat pies and faggots, plus a wide variety of local cheeses, butter, laver bread and sheep's milk yoghourt. There a high quality fishmonger who brings the freshest of the catch up from Milford and sells out fast. There a stall offering freshly-made Syrian snacks both sweet and savoury plus all sorts of Middle Eastern goods including spices, dried fruit, oils and teas. There are stalls selling local organic veg, eggs, plants and crafts. And there's a tea and coffee counter with home-made cakes to eat on the spot or take away - along with seating to stop and have a chat with the locals, many of whom are Welsh-speaking and have been coming to the market for years.
The market opens around 9am and starts packing up at 1 (the butchers stays open longer but others leave when they've sold out.) It really is a unique opportunity to experience a small-town tradition that's fast disappearing, and to grab some enticing comestibles at the same time. And while you're there don't miss the fabulous mosaic mural depicting the area - all done by local children.
