点评:This is my personal experience and isn’t meant to discourage you from going, but rather make you aware of things that I wish I knew in advance.
This is NOT a float down a lazy river! Although there are parts of the river that are calm, there are many white water rapids and the river is littered with rocks and boulders of all sizes in different spots throughout the river; some of which you cannot see. Keep in mind, you do not have any way to paddle or steer your tube other than your hands.
A little bit about myself, I am in my mid-60’s, I am 6’1” and I am 200lbs. I swim laps in my community pool each week, so I would consider myself an above average swimmer. I bought brand new close toed water shoes, a long sleeve rash guard, along with my swim shorts, a hat with a strap around my chin, and a pair of sunglasses.
The instructions about the river from the driver were brief and inadequate.
For example, it was told to everyone that you will most likely fall out at least once but you just get back in your tube; “not a big deal just grab your tube and get back on.” What they fail to mention is that your tube isn’t gonna stay with you when you fall out, and you’ll most like fall on a rock or you’ll be drug into one.
They also said the water “doesn’t go past your waist” which is false! There are some parts where it’s maybe 2-3 feet deep but there were moments where I, a 6’1” man, could NOT touch the bottom.
Make sure your life vests are secured and tightened! There is not anyone to do safety checks for life vests, check the tubes between each use, nor are there any safety checkpoints down the river in case there’s an emergency.
The water itself is about 60°, so prepare for very cold water as it comes from snow melt in the mountains.
You immediately get separated from your party, as this current is swift so do not plan on staying together with your group unless you hold onto each other’s tubes.
I went with my daughter and we started at the same time and held onto each other’s tubes and still got separated about two minutes in from the current pulling you apart.
Before long, my daughter was at least a quarter of a mile down the way and I was by myself. Not long after that, I couldn’t see her and I had fallen out of my tube between the white water rapids, I couldn’t catch my tube so it was being pushed down the river without me. My life vest wasn’t tightened enough because the bottom strap that was supposed to be by my waist was up around my neck cutting off my air circulation and not keeping me afloat. I got pulled under the water and I bashed my head into a rock whilst being underwater. Both of my legs got scraped up, I was yelling for help and there wasn’t anyone around that I could see.
My tube was no where to be found as it was being pushed down the river without me. Thankfully, there was a girl from another family that was tubing who came up behind me that let me hold onto her tube until I could get to my daughter who helped me try to get back on my tube.
By that point my lips were blue, I was shaking from the cold water, both my legs were bleeding, and I had a hematoma the size of a golf ball on the back of my head while I was gasping for air because my ill fitting life vest was strangling me. My daughter who is an adult in her late 20’s had to grab me by the vest and then sit me in the tube and take the vest off me so I could breathe easier and cough up water.
It is NOT as easy as we were told by just “getting back in your tube” even off to the side of the river where the current is supposed to be calmer my daughter and I struggled to get me back on the tube for a few minutes.
We then got to the concrete bridge which was the halfway point and there is a little shore you can get out and go around instead of going underneath the bridge. Thankfully, there was a family who was waiting on the shore for my daughter and I to make sure we were safe. It took three men from the shoreline to lift me and my tube up out of the river because I had no feeling in my legs by that point. If it wasn’t for those men I would’ve gone underneath the bridge with the river current and most likely gotten stuck. My water shoes had holes in them from the rocks scraping against me.
After I was pulled out of the river, I sat in the sun with my daughter for a while and then we had to climb up the side of the shore through rocks with our tubes to get to the other side of the bridge (which had a very low clearance which is why people go around it) and I knew I wasn’t going to get back in the water. I was ready to walk back to the check in area miles away if it meant we didn’t have to go in that water again.
Thankfully, one of the Barefoot Tube workers who was driving by in his own personal car saw us sitting on a rock with our tubes in the sun and had the decency to get out and ask if we were okay. The employee then loaded our tubes up and took us back to our car by the check in area (which was at least a 15 min drive) and we went home. At one point it was mentioned to us by him that “no one has died in this river” saying it like it was an advantage.
Well I would hope not because this is where people come to try to relax and have fun!
It has been ten days since this incident and my lump on my head is almost gone but not quite, I have numerous bruises from my legs and thighs all the way up to my shoulders, my lacerations on my shins are starting to heal up some but they are still very noticeable.
I just don’t want anyone to be under the impression that this is a lazy river where you can sit back, pop open a beer and close your eyes. You have to constantly be looking for obstacles, find a way to steer, and know that you’re at the mercy of the water when you fall out of your tube.
If you are in a 4-8 person raft, with paddles, helmets, and a guide, this would’ve been a completely different experience!
Do NOT recommend Barefoot Tubing for anyone over 50 years old or under 12 years old.
