This company clearly deals with many people who have never run a river, and because of this they do things that no company I have been with ever does.
They are running 2 rapids on the river, a class two and a class three. They run the three again for a total of three rapids.
They put eight people in as medium raft as long with a guide. Prior to making the runs they explain all the normal safety things, except for high siding, which they omit. Now here is the part things go terribly wrong, they explain the most important instruction for when in the rapid. They will call out,”get down!” At that point they want everyone in the raft to hold the rope on the outside edge of the raft with your outside hand, get down onto the floor of the raft on your behind so that your legs are extended into other people and pull your oar down to the float so that the blade is facing upwards away from people and under your arm. When this is called out no one does any rowing when running the rapid. The raft is at mercy of the current. No one can even see the rapid while in it. Once the boat reaches the bottom of the rapid, then everyone is told to get back into position and start rowing with the boat completely filled with water, which can happen normally. While making your run the guide who also has a single oar tries to do what hue can, but failed.
I have run the Youghiogheny in PA, the New, the Cheat, and the Gauley Rivers, in W.VA, as well as all 277 miles of the Colorado River in a Dory.
I have never been instructed to run the river in the manor like this company operates.
I felt so unimpressed with this company, It also steals all of the thrill from the run, and that is one of the big reasons we do this, for the thrill. I declined to complete the second run.
