点评:The Church of St Lucy is tucked away in a corner of, a little off the main corso. I had seen it before but this was the first time I’d found it open.
Built in 1653, the Baroque facade is unrestored, uncleaned and looks a little worse for wear. In its day, it would have looked quite grand. The main entrance is highly decorative, with columns and carved bunches of grapes but the niches on either side are empty and the original statues are long gone.
Inside, the church is also in need of some TLC but it has fared a little better than the outside.
The walls are mottled and discoloured but there are still a number of artworks and lovely white marble statues in the side chapels.
One of the noteworthy works is a painting of the Madonna by the Tuscan artist, Luca Signorelli. It’s at the front of the church, in a side chapel to the right of the altar. However when we looked, there were two paintings here - a brightly coloured, small painting of Mary and Child is set into a much larger and darker painting. Without more information, we couldn’t tell for sure which one was the Signorelli.
Arched niches on ether side of this chapel contained white marble statues of the disciples, Luke the Evangelist (on the right), and St Matthew (on the left). A bull, the symbol of strength and sacrifice lies at Luke’s feet and a small angel kneels at Matthew’s feet. The angel holds up a book for Matthew to start writing the pages that would become known as the first gospel of the New Testament.
Both the saints have pained, long-suffering looks. It’s probably not surprising considering that both died horrible deaths as martyrs - Luke was hanged from an olive tree while preaching in Greece and Matthew was stabbed with a sword in Ethiopia.
The high altar itself is quite bare except for a single crucifix. Behind the altar, there is an imposing black marble reredos which must have once held a large painting or decoration but is now filled with a blank panel.
Overall, this is not one of the main sights and if you have limited time in Monteulciano, there are other more impressive churches such as St Augustines, the Cathedral or St Biagio’s to see instead.
