点评:when one thinks of mining in Cornwall most people identify with the tin mines. However China Clay Mining had as big an impact on the economy of Cornwall and still does.
As you drive in and see the white clay figures at the entrance you are already being transported back in time. The museum information centre, coffee shop and souvenir shop are located in the original buildings of the china clay mines that were leased by the Martyn Brothers from the Mount Edgcumbe Estate.
The information centre at the entrance gives one a great view of the history of not just wheal Martyn, but the whole china clay industry. It also describes how the china clay or Kaolin is formed from the weathering of the granite rocks. It is well worth spending 30 minutes here before heading into the main museum area.
From the information centre you can access the Discovery Centre and then out and start your walk through the old mine buildings and processing areas.
The area is well marked and you will pass water wheels, transport building which house the differing types of transport used during the history of Wheal Martyn from early Horse drawn carts and wagons to early trucks and steam locomotives there are great displays to view.
There is also a section on the uses of China Clay and also the brick making industry.
The impressive 35ft water wheel which still turns, through settling pits and finally the refining process.
Once you have completed this section of the museum there is then a nature trail that leads passed the boulder park with the different types of unweathered granite and a small pit exposure of the insitu granite. From here you can wind your way up to the pit view point where you can see a working china pit. You can then return via the Flat Rod Tunnel, which was part of the transporting process of mined clay to the processing area.
The trails are easy walking and not difficult so you can stroll and enjoy nature as you go.
If there is one small disappointment with the museum it would be with the view point. While you can still see the pit wall the view point is too far back to actually see into the pit itself. I know there have to be H&S concerns, but if you visit the Super Pit at Kalgoorlie the view point there is constructed so you can safely see into the pit. This gives you a far better idea of the mining pit process.
Apart from that certainly this is one of the better mining museums that we have visited and is well worth a few hours of your time. It is especially interesting for children.
