Disappointing Visit
Old Washington Visitors Center的点评
点评：Our Saturday day trip from Cincinnati to Old Washington KY in April 2022 was very disappointing especially compared to previous visits when the town was thriving.
The 1807 Harriet Beecher Stowe house and its 1795 out building are in very poor condition.The outside property hasn’t been maintained very well. And its windows are missing shutters and their frames need to be repaired and peeling paint removed. (The sills are down to bare wood!) The rock sidewalks are broken into pieces and can be tough to navigate. Ditto for the large white home next to the Presbyterian Church at the corner.
There are only two shops left in the whole historic area - one is a nice antique shop and the other a lamp shop. Other buildings are for sale or empty. The Paxton House appeared closed and we saw NO tour guides. (I was told on my last visit tours cost $8 per person but there’s no mention of that on their website.) The only restaurant in town is a coffee shop in the Washington Hall building that closed at 2pm so there’s no place else to eat or drink.There was a sign inside the hall that said “Visit Shops & Gallery on 2nd Floor.” A lady who has a yoga studio there said the shops and galleries were closed awhile ago and she wished they’d take the sign down.
Next week is the town’s chocolate festival; however the two business owners we spoke with said they weren’t even sure they’re having it.
To sum up, it’s so sad to see such a treasure as Old Washington and it’s historic buildings fall into such neglect and disrepair. I’m sure Covid didn’t help. I hope someone heads up a renovation effort before it’s too late.
