Long but Enjoyable Drive to the Summit of Haleakalā

点评：The Haleakalā Highway climbs up to 10,000 ft and brings you to the summit of Haleakalā National Park from where you can look 2,600 ft down into the crater of the dormant volcano. The drive gets more spectacular the higher you get. It is a somewhat challenging winding road with steep drop-offs in parts and with no guardrail, but it is well paved and manageable if you are a confident driver and take your time especially when making the descent. It's a long drive. It takes about an hour to reach the summit once you start on the Highway. The drive is enjoyable but reaching the summit of the crater is the highlight. I found the GuideAlong Audio Tour (also known as the GyPSy App) to be very helpful when making the drive as it provides much information about Haleakalā, and it helps pass the time. I stopped at a couple spots to get photos as you can see all the way down the southern coast of Maui to McGregor Point if the weather is clear. If it is cloudy and raining, there is no point to making this harrowing drive as you won't see anything at the summit.
