点评:This is the last National Monument we’ve not been to in Kansas is Fort Scott. So, this trip was an opportunity to see it. The Park Service has done a nice job of recreating the Fort with reconstructed buildings and a nice Visitor Center. We had a nice introduction by the resident Park Ranger. After her talk, we went next door to the video. Quite heavy on Civil War activities. The display area was also focused heavily on the Civil War. I got the impression earlier that the Fort was mostly built as a buffer between Europeans and the Natives, then as a staging area for the Civil War. Got a bit tired of the Civil War presentations. Though, they were all nicely done.
The Fort consists of a square surrounded by a number of buildings originally used as barracks, headquarters, horse stalls and support buildings. All are well done. We walked the square and went into all the buildings we could. Reminds me a lot of Fort Larned west of here.
