点评:This mall was once a thriving and active place. It was the first mall in the community when it opened in 1967. JCPenney and Sears were the two anchor stores with a bunch of other smaller chains and independently owned stores. Bergner’s was added in 1973, as well as a movie theater next to it. Kohl’s came much later in 1984. A food court was added in 1989 after the old Roland’s closed. The movie theater closed in 1993 but the mall still thrived. Old Navy came around 2000 and is still there. Finally, in 1999 it landed a Famous Barr which became Macy’s in 2006.
Then in 2017, things started to change. We lost Macy’s, followed by JCPenney’s. One by one, more and more stores began to vacate the mall and few have been replaced since. An H & M briefly came to the space where JcPenney’s was, but quickly left. A Planet Fitness came and is still there. A few sports shops and a Spencer’s Gifts remain. Only one or two spots in the old food court remain. BUT, there is LOTS of walking room if you need to exercise and want to shop!
If only someone would buy and revitalize the space, it could still have potential. Some housing options could address our homeless problem. The DMV could relocate there to get out of the rough west side. New owners could also do what they did with College Hills and revitalize it to a shopping center. I know that malls are not all the venues they once were with almost everything online now and safety and security issues. Rent can also be an issue. But something needs to be done if it is going to avoid being closed and torn down.
