A first step towards ethical elephant interaction

点评：if you are in Mondulkiri for a short time or have limited $$ then Mondulkiri Project offers a great opportunity to engage with elephants in a mostly ethical way. The project supports a small group of local Bunong people, providing employment and a model for tourism that protects the local environment and treats the elephants with love and respect - a far cry from the elephants' previous employment and exploitation in logging and carrying tourists.
Whilst you wont see elephant riding here but the ellies are encouraged to interact with humans by feeding them with copious bunches of bananas and this may not be in the best interest of their health (they were rather overweight), and they are also bribed to swim and bathe with the tourists BUT the journey to truly ethical tourism must be progressive and this does provide a really good first step for a local community.
We were lucky enough to also visit the local Elephant Valley Project which as a charitable organization with support from overseas funding and professional expertise is undoubtably a more ethical project, but in the end the elephants at both are amazing and you will fall in love!
On a practical note - you will be asked to assemble at the organiser's cafe at 7.30 am - this is totally unnecessary!!! - they have NO intention of leaving any time before 9 in fact they were still transporting guests from partner accommodation there at past 9 -This is a ruse to get you to buy breakfast at the cafe. There was also a lot of hanging around when on site at the camp which was frustrating - take a book to pass the time.
