点评:I had the chance to attend a "pre-launch tasting" at The Springbok Café, and I have to say it’s something fresh and exciting for Hunza and further afield for Pakistan! The café brings a mix of South African flavors with a local twist, and the passion behind it really shows.
The highlight for me was the "Lekker Yak Burger" (I was educated about what Lekker means - a word from Afrikaans/Dutch language meaning good/tasty/fantastic). It was juicy, perfectly cooked for my liking (medium to well done), perfectly seasoned, and flavorsome. It came with onions, not raw but caramelized adding a tadness of sweet taste and cheese. The Yak meat is similar to beef but lean, I personally could not tell the difference between yak and beef patties. Accompanying "Slap Chips" were slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the "Karoo Cooler", a fruit smoothy using local pureed cherries ( I was told the cherries were from a local orchard, from last season but in season they will be fresh) was a refreshing surprise. Everything we tried had a unique touch but still felt comforting and familiar. Oh before I forget, the desserts were a heaven send for anyone with a sweet tooth, basically the whole Pakistani nation. I tried Malva Pudding. It looked chocolaty, rich, with a hint of apricots (again I was informed it was from local orchards), drenched in sweet buttery syrup. I was thinking of comparisons, but couldn't, nearest comparison is a much more sophisticated and yummy version of Pakistani Gulab Jamun's.
The direct uninterrupted view of Passu Cones, along the Hunza river bank, great hosts and a native South African lady, the chef/owner, who has made Hunza her new home, this is brilliant for Hunza and fantastic news for millions that visit Hunza every year. You can tell they’re putting a lot of thought into both the menu and the experience. I can already see this becoming a go-to spot for both locals and travelers.
Looking forward to coming back once they officially open! If you’re in Hunza, keep this place on your radar. It’s going to be special.
