点评:Wedged between vacation homes, a state park, and a steel mill, Indiana Dunes is not a typical national park. Even so, the park protects unique habitats and offers a variety of recreational opportunities in a major metropolitan area.
The visitor center, just outside the park off Highway 20, has nice displays about the formation of the dunes and the wildlife that call the area home. Inside the park, I started with the quick walk to the beach at Mt. Baldy, which had great views of Lake Michigan and the monumental dune.
After that, I stopped by the Great Marsh Trail and then drove over to the west side of the park to hike the Miller Woods Trail. The hike was great, and went through several ecosystems, including the cool oak savanna. Unfortunately, the trail was quite overgrown in spots, so I didn't make it all the way to the beach.
Although I visited during the summer, it was rainy in the morning, so their weren't a whole lot of people around. It's not quite as spectacular as many other national parks, but Indiana Dunes is well worth a visit.
