点评:I was lucky enough to secure two places on the Boston Lodge guided tour made available as part of National Lottery Open Week. It was absolutely outstanding!
The tour started with a short steam train ride across the cob from Porthmadog station to the Boston Lodge works. That was exciting in itself - being pulled by an engine which was built in 1893 and with stunning scenery either side of the track .... the glorious weather did help but the little journey there and back was superb.
Our volunteer guide, Stuart, was incredibly knowledgeable and he and his colleagues provided the small group with lots of interesting facts including information about the origins of the railway (and the cob), how it had developed & progressed and, of course, about the engines, carriages and machinery maintained and cared for at Boston Lodge.
The Boston Lodge works are fascinating too and contain so much railway history ... not just the locomotives available to see (& even touch), but the buildings themselves have a story to tell. They are also being superbly renovated using Lottery funding!
What was also interesting was that the vast majority of the 'workers' we saw during the tour were volunteers. There were many people engaged in various activities in the different parts of the works, all of whom are dedicated volunteers and many of whom travel great distances to be part of this incredible piece of history.
I booked the tickets as a surprise for my husband's birthday (actually the day we took the tour) and he was very, very impressed. I was too. It was honestly one of the best tours we have ever done and I would urge everyone to book even if you don't think you are a heritage railway enthusiast, you will not regret it.
