点评:We visited the Abbey whilst on holiday near Pickering. The staff at the entrance were friendly and helpful and there was no hard sell for membership. The lad that served us claimed "it is better than Whitby" - and he was right, it is. There is so much more to see and we spent longer here than we did visiting Whitby, about 20 years ago. It is very atmospheric and easy to imagine the monks going about their daily business. We also had a snack at the cafe and that was quite nice. The only reason I have given 4 stars, instead of 5, is because we were both unhappy about the way the stone ruins were being treated as a playground like an adventure park and not being respected as a sacred ruin. There were lots of kids, and even some adults, climbing all over the place. The final straw came when I had my camera ready to take a shot of the altar and an ignorant woman walked up, looked at me and then climbed onto the altar stone and laid down flat on top of it. I am rarely stuck fro words but I was then ! Apart from being disrespectful there are also health and safety issues as it is extremely dangerous and English Heritage should do something about it.I
