Beautiful beach. However, the lifeguards need ADA training and the ability to make real-time decisions.

点评：We visit every year and love this area of North Myrtle Beach. Our 6 year old grandchild is now a Type 1 diabetic and requires insulin to survive. The heat and sun can be dangerous for Type 1 diabetic children, so precautions have to be taken. We have to have a cool shaded space to rest, eat, and receive injections when needed. We researched the clamshell/infant tent requirements and brought one smaller than the allowed size. The first day we set up the clamshell, we were approached by a lifeguard who stated we could not use the clamshell unless one of the children was 18 months or younger. We explained that the 6 year old had Type 1 diebetes and why the clamshell was needed, but she said we would have to take it down. We asked to speak to her supervisor. The supervisor said it was an ordinance. She didn't make the rules and only followed them. We explained that Type 1 diebetes is covered under ADA and what could happen if they go too low or high and how the extra shade would help manage those situations. Her response was that she couldn't allow us to use it and would have an officer explain it to us if needed. I was extremely nice and calm when speaking to both lifeguards, so the officer comment was not appropriate. After the supervisor left and we put the clamshell away the first lifeguard explained where the north myrtle beach and the myrtle beach line was and explained on the myrtle beach side the clamshell is allowed with no 18 month or below rule. We will have to stay in Myrtle Beach going forward. Disability training is definitely needed for any beach employees enforcing ordinances.
