点评:Carnarvon Gorge's peak season is the winter months. This is for a few reasons. It's the dry season, day time temps are much better and less fire risk. However if you can only spare the summer holidays then a trip to Carnarvon shouldn't be ruled out completely.
Our family is no stranger to bushwalking and we did a few longer walks in preparation (around 10kms). We are used to the heat and humidity - but we hit the trail at 7am to avoid walking in the hottest part of the day and took in the Art Gallery and Amphitheater, skipping Moss Garden (kids were pretty cooked) . We took 2L of water each and used water purification tablets for extra water from the creek. Bug spray a must for ticks. Basic snake bite first aid is a good thing to have - just in case!
The upside of walking in the off season is the trail was quiet and we only ran into a handful of other trekkers. It meant listening for birds and taking in the breath taking scenery all the more enjoyable. As an Australian, it feels so important to connect to this land. Wild, untamed, rich in cultural significance.
It was hot. The last 2kms were tough. We were lucky with the weather (it was only 30 deg) and back before afternoon storms broke out. But I would do it all again for sure!
