点评:The house and grounds were lovely, though I had to come home and learn about it on the Internet. There is such a lack of basic information, just a few laminated cards with information about the function of the rooms aimed at year 4 children. I had no idea when it was built or about any of its history till I could get a signal at home to look it up. An audio guide would be brilliant, but a plaque or two explaining the history at the start would have helped.
For a 4 hour visit, I spent at least one hour of it queuing for the cafe and garden tea shop. The cafe at the main house is so badly designed with long queues through narrow doorways and in steps. The poor kitchen staff have to get through the queues with their trays from the upstairs kitchen to the downstairs servery. How much would it take to just seriously look at relocating the servery next to the kitchen? I'm sure this cafe makes lots of money for English Heritage so it would be worth investing in it. I'm not sure why it took so long to be served as the staff seemed busy, but I waited about 45 minutes and the queue was 3 times as long when I came out.
The staff in the visitor centre were very welcoming and I will come again but will bring a picnic next time and save myself £25.
