• Don Quixote's "Dreams" fly by instantly. That is, the soloists do their job, while the corps de ballet is mostly acting as pieces of furniture
I already told you before, their corps de ballet is not brilliant, to put it mildly, and they try to use it as little as possible.
Apparently, the production of "Don Quixote" by Alexei Fadeechev at the Bolshoi Theater was taken as a basis: the costumes are similar, and the synopsis, too.
True, somewhat simplified. But the stage director is very inventive and witty. He definitely knows how to turn the company’s weaknesses into opportunities.
For example, the jig:
At the Bolshoi this dashing dance to the music of Vassily Solovyov-Sedoy is usually performed by soloists or promising corps de ballet artists, which are many.
In a touring troupe, the problem is exactly the opposite – lack of staff!
And what did they do?
They employ the existing characters: the innkeeper and his wife, Gamache and Sancho Panza. But for such a small number, their strengths and skills are quite sufficient.
Moreover, the backup dancers in the background are young cooks of different ages and heights. A great idea! Everyone knows: if you want to touch the audience, let children on stage. Right?
I will not dwell on the costumes and scenery, you will see them on the photos.
The cast is always the same, next time most probably we’ll see the same dancers in Don Quixote .
Don Quixote — Yuri Kravets
Comically serious, as the Knight of the Sad Countenance should be. Frankly, he is not tall enough to be a real Hidalgo from La Mancha. But his beard is impressive, it goes almost to his waist! In general, the character is rather colorless, to be honest there is nothing special to say.
Sancho Panza — Kirill Shirko
He has a lot of fun, the part is mostly mimic, but memorable.
Gamache — Denis Tyurin
He even manages to dance a little, both on his own and when he and Sancho are thrown in to help the corps de ballet.
There are few men in the company, so these two dance together with the bullfighters, not to leave the sultry Spanish women alone.
Lorenzo, Kitri's father, innkeeper — Sergey Smirnov
Good acting. Look, when Basil kind of stabs himself, Lorenzo grabbs the knife and thoroughly examins it; why leave good instrument, it will come in handy for cookery!

Already a respectable lady, but dances with a passion.

Not exactly ballet, more of a ‘dance de character’
Cupid - Kristina Berdnikova
The younger of the two Berdnikovs, very small and nimble. You saw her in "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai" — one of the Polish brides.

The only ballerina I remember "from the past".
It was her I watched in "Sleeping Beauty" almost 10 years ago. Here, at RAMT, with the Smirnov-Golovanov ballet. It was the first private troupe during perestroika, and, of course, they mainly worked abroad.
The joyful Kitri appears to be the part specially created for Liliya Orekhova, for her southern appearance and no less bright temperament. She still spins fouettés without moving aside, although a little slower than the music suggests. And she fearlessly flies all the way up, into the arms fo her skillful Basilio.
I was glad to see her again.
Basilio - Sergey Skvortsov
The public loves this charismatic dancer, and he loves the public. Before the final curtain goes, he always bows so touchingly, pressing both hands to his heart. The summer before last, he was officially named the best dancer of the "Ballet Seasons".
He seems to have been born with this powerful rotation, right off the bat. And his leaps are as impressive. Surely Basilio is a very proper part for him. I suppose he could make a very good Spartacus if any wandering company had the means to stage the Roman saga.
