Bayard Cutting Arboretum的点评
点评：We have been visiting the Bayard Cutting Arboretum for many years in all seasons. Every other week there's some new bloom to see, and in autumn the foliage is grand.
It's a level, beautiful stroll you can make as long or as short as you wish. Its pinetum, moss garden, holly garden, rhododendron path, dahlia garden, azalea woods, specimen trees, outbuildings, Olmsted-designed driveway, and so on, are typical of great estates but put together with real imagination and quiet grace. The house itself is sprawling but casual, with its undulating shingles and a perfect river-facing veranda. You can have a delicious lunch on it. We do. Staff are lovely.
Throughout your walk in the Arboretum you'll find benches sited exactly as you'd like, snug beneath trees, set in gardens, or beside the river.
But I must take exception to the terrible waste of resources that is its new visitor center, which is a see-through box: glass-fronted, vast, and empty, squatting on a greatly expanded parking lot of black asphalt which used to be green grass and well-placed trees. As if what the world needs is more black asphalt and two single bathroom stalls (which, to be fair, are wheelchair accessible).
Still, once you turn your back on this expensive, ungainly mistake, you find yourself very much at home with the Cuttings and very glad they gave you this glorious retreat. That the Cuttings were good people (and, by the way, good friends of Edith Wharton) somehow makes the place all the more serene -- an atmosphere that's hard to beat.
