点评:Other reviewers in recent times massively overreact, this place is wonderful.
For context, and my reasoning for why I believe my review is worth something, I’d consider this quite unbiased as I am both an animal lover (frequent game park visitor) and very new to this zoo. It came onto my radar in the last week after learning two things, 1) it’s the eighth largest zoo by area in the world, and 2) it is our only nationally accredited zoo in the country.
I do not have prior context to how the zoo used to function, so even though I acknowledge that it may have “worsened”, I provide my review for the experience we got on the day.

We went as a couple on a quiet, cloudy Saturday, with sparse rain and few people early on. By the end of the day it picked up a decent bit.
In summary, the grounds are a 3 out of 5
The animals and exhibits are a 4.5 out of 5
Food was a 4.5 out of 5
-
Grounds are beautiful in general, certainly has some parts here and there that could use a bit of attention however I wouldn’t say it affected our experience too much. Most habitats look appealing for both us and the animals, my only issue would probably be the cable car that doesn’t look like it works, as well as some parts under construction that don’t look like priorities as it stands.
There was an abundance of cool, exotic and awesome animals to engage with. A handful of enclosures were empty however we still spent a good 4.5 hours walking around just looking at animals, on a day where a fair few of them were hiding away inside their private areas due to the rain and cold. You definitely won’t be disappointed with the selection of animals on offer.
I am unsure what happened with other reviewer’s food but the chips, Russian and chicken burger we had were all superb and we will certainly be back partially for the food alone. This was from the restaurant on site and was also well priced, filling us up for R112 (two people).
Overall, I can certainly see a lot of areas for the zoo and staff to improve, however our overall experience was 5.5 hours well spent, leaving pleased, having spent R170 for us (two student fees + parking) and looking forward to our next visit.
If anyone is curious how I could not have a moral issue with the zoo as a premise, I would love to get into that, but without getting into it, know that this national zoo is WAZA accredited, and has made many strides to become more morally acceptable, including setting the last elephant in the zoo free last year.
I hope you also give this institution a chance and contribute to keeping it running with your entrance fee.
