点评：Flying from Edinburgh to Sumburgh, I wondered what lay ahead for me with the tour company, Shetland Nature and the five days that I would be spending with them. This was my first visit to the islands and although travelling alone, I knew I would be joining a group of like-minded enthusiasts, some who perhaps had felt the same irresistible call of the islands over the years and who, only now in 2025, had made the journey here; unable to resist its pull any longer, longing to know it better.
In the ‘Up Helly Aa Tour with Kate Humble’, Shetland Nature surpassed all expectations in the days that followed, crafting a tour that not only brings people together to show them the full beauty of the island’s landscapes but also the wonderful cultural aspects that underpin life here. The big skies, the enigmatic swirls of the weather, the rock formations and cliffs are complemented by meeting real Shetlanders and listening to their stories…what they do, what they make, how they live…and just why Up Helly Aa is so important each year, lifting the curtain on how not just the men but the families prepare for it throughout the year.
The history of the Islands and the strong Nordic influence were also brilliantly brought to life by this expert team. Highlights included a tour of the Jarlshof with James (Tait) which felt like walking through five thousand years of Shetland occupation in one place; a visit to meet the Delting Jarl squad who shared with us just what preparing for an ‘Up Helly Aa’ involves and what it truly feels like to be a Viking. Becoming ‘Jackatha, the Shield Maiden’, sword in one hand and shield in the other, definitely felt quite exhilarating that evening! The big event…’Up Helly Aa’ itself, always on the last Tuesday of January each year, was visually stunning and the team were superb at managing the timing of the day, coordinating where we needed to be for key events and affording the very best experience for everyone!.
As well as the bigger moments, there were also the quieter ones that held their own magic. Kate (Humble) taking me back to a place we’d passed on the road earlier, to see Shetland Ponies during our lunch break at the Sumburgh Hotel, knowing that I’d missed them the previous day. Jon (Dunn) crafting a great conversational walk through Lerwick as we passed buildings that I recognised such as Jimmy Perez’s harbour side home and the Police Station from the ‘Shetland’ programmes (based on the Ann Cleves novels). Brydon (Thomason) opening doors to the incredible wildlife on the islands; the otters, mountain hare and birds who make this enigmatic environment and natural habitat, their home.
Accomodation and food were also of the highest standard. Breakfasts and dinners were all held at Voe House and expertly cooked by Jackie (Leask), a wickedly good chef with a brilliant sense of humour. The evenings were also well catered for with opportunities for further cultural insight into the music, magic and folklore of the islands. The fiddle group Haltadans led by Maurice (Henderson) were a joy to listen to, conjuring up tales and images of Trows and Skeklers with their playing; with two actually appearing in person later that same evening!
Shetland Nature - and this tour in particular - do an incredible job of bringing the very beautiful and enigmatic Shetland Islands to life, highlighting all of its many shades as well as its glorious light. Would I go back? After this wonderful, unforgettable experience and the time that I spent there…a million times, yes!
