点评:We visited the Akrotiri Archaeological Excavation Site in December.
We had a hard time locating the entrance (we went there on our own) as the signage for this place was so small that we missed it the first time.
It was fascinating to see evidence uncovered by the archaeological team, that the Akrotiri site had been occupied by humans as far back as the Neolithic Age (4,500 BC)!
This is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean and Greece.
Akrotiri grew from a small fishing, farming village to an important trading centre. It was a major centre in the trading of copper due to its strategic position between Cyprus and Minoan Crete.
From the pottery, vessels and wall murals we could see that Akrotiri residents enjoyed a high standard of living. Their artistic skills and talents as seen through the vessels were truly impressive. The wall murals depicted nature, religion and gave us a glimpse into their everyday life.
Sadly, a powerful volcanic eruption in 1613 BC and a major earthquake buried the town under volcanic ash. But thankfully the volcanic ash had actually helped preserved the settlement and the many artefacts, which are now being displayed in museums.
The excavation site is like an indoor museum. It is covered with a bio-climatic roof to protect the artefacts from the elements. We walked on timber boardwalks to view the display below us.
It was low season when we were there on a December afternoon. I noticed that there were just two other couples besides us, so the whole place was really quiet and peaceful.
I still could not believe that what we saw were 6,000 years old. 😅
