点评:I was very keen to visit Sandsfoot Castle and am glad that I did, even though it is now merely an impressive Tudor ruin.
A relative baby in Castle terms, this structure, built to defend this part of the coast from the French and Spanish, was completed in 1541 during the reign of King Henry VIII, on whose orders it was constructed.
Alas that it's greatest and most formidable enemies turned out not to be France or Spain, but rather the weather and the sea. The castle, within 100 years or so, was well on its way to becoming the ruin we now see today, as coastal erosion dragged the gun floors into the sea, rendering it all but useless.
Over time, as the threat from Europe presumably became less, the stone was robbed for other building projects in Weymouth, most notably the town bridge which still stands today.
In 1930 it was closed to the public due to being unsafe, and what remains today would almost certainly have been entirely condemned had it not been for the great efforts of local groups (Friends of Rodwell Trail & Sandsfoot Castle) and the Heritage Lottery Fund back in 2012, who worked to get the castle back open to the public.
Sadly for me the castle is now, yet again, closed to the public due to health and safety. You can still get up close enough to it to get a real feel for it, and you can still appreciate it's commanding position and stunning views across the harbour - you just can't go into it.
Hopefully, the ever officious clipboard brigade will ultimately pass it safe once more, and people will be allowed back in to experience this castle's unique charm. I know that I would certainly return to do so.
