点评:We went to Orca Camp in early August 2024. There were 8 of us total - 2 families of 4. We had 4 50-somethings & 4 20-somethings. Everyone had an EPIC time! We all agreed that it was a perfect experience - the weather, the wildlife, the camp, the guides, the guests, the boats. Everything came together just right. That said - we all also agreed that it would have been a good trip even if some of those things hadn't been so great. Weather & wildlife are just luck. You get what you get - sometimes the weather is good, sometimes not. Sometimes the wildlife shows up, sometimes not. Wildcoast Adventures & everyone at Orca Camp hit it out of the park on the things you can control. We give them 5 stars across the board.
If you like camping & being out in the wild AND you enjoy just a bit of pampering, this is the trip for you! We all had some experience with kayaking but not a ton. I'd say it is more important to be generally fit & not anxious on the water than to be a super experienced kayaker. As far as the camp itself goes, it's great! The food was good & plentiful. The wood burning hot tub & sauna help you warm up quickly. A hot shower is available everyday. The cabins are cute & comfy. Even the outhouses are pretty darn good. The guides (Rachel, Josh, Diana) & camp manager (Bender) all went above and beyond to ensure an excellent experience. And we saw orca everyday, we also saw humpback whales, eagles, sea lions, seals, a mink, dolphins, porpoise & bears. Like I said - it was epic.
Here is the review I wish I'd been able to read, once we were signed up for Orca Camp. What to expect & what to pack. I'm a mildly fit 54 year old woman with a lot of water experience but not a lot of kayaking experience. I paddled in a 2 person kayak with my husband everyday - which made it easier. There are 3 paddles daily & you can choose morning (1 hour-ish), day (much longer 2-5hours) & sunset (1 hour) We had cool, foggy mornings. The morning paddles (6:30am) were by far the most productive for seeing orca, so I recommend them. I wore: a wool tank top, a fleece long sleeved shirt, a down vest & a rain coat on top; on bottom I wore spandex shorts (capri leggings would work too - but not full length because you wade out into the water), rain pants (rolled up), neoprene socks & chaco sandals; additionally i had a buff, a fleece hat & paddling gloves. When the sun was up, I dropped the down vest & added a baseball cap.
It was cool & damp so it's good to have separate paddling clothes & camp clothes. Only my rain jacket served in both areas. It's good to have dry wool socks for everyday & also camp shoes (slip ons) that are dry. My kids only had their chacos & didn't like having wet shoes all the time. The main tent has a wood burning stove so you can dry things but it takes time & can be crowded. Fleece & wool are really the best, they dry quickly & are warm even when wet. Layers are key.
It was in the high 80'sF when we left Campbell River & we were all feeling silly for all our warm clothes. As soon as we got off land, the temp dropped 20 degrees (at least it felt like it)!! And it was in the 60's F the entire trip. Don't let warm temps in Campbell River fool you!
Bring your own binoculars if you have them. There are some at camp but not as many binoculars as guests. A quick dry towel is a must - hot tub, sauna, shower - you'll need it for all those activities & flip flops for the same reason. Camp is so nice & enjoyable it can be hard to force yourself out to paddle! A book or journal is nice for around the fire.
