点评:We had been looking forward to visiting Ponta for years since our first trip was cancelled at the start of Covid. But sadly our experience with Back To Basics was frustrating and stressful from beginning to end. The guys were friendly enough in general conversation, but the problems started the moment we arrived to set up for the dive. Our dive master (Dusty, I believe) was somewhere between condescending and passive aggressive throughout the setup and briefing. I am advanced PADI and have done 27 dives in various places. My friend was on 107 dives all around the world. But any time we didn’t know the answer to a question or asked for clarification, he made us feel stupid. And we’ve never felt like that before with other dive centres. For example, he basically mocked us for not knowing how to use a dive computer - but we’ve never needed to on any previous dive. We are British, so we get dry sarcasm, but this was not that. It made us feel uncomfortable and - more worryingly - unsafe. I almost pulled out of the dive and sacrificed my deposit because of these bad vibes; I wish I had. I told the dive master (DM) I struggle with equalising my ears - a pretty common diving situation - and said I just needed to descend steadily; to which he said ‘I don’t mind that’ (as if he was doing me a favour). At no point in the briefing was there any talk of checking air levels, or how we would ascend to the surface if someone was running low. When it came to the dive, despite being told we would meet at the back of the boat and then descend together, by the time we went to the back to descend, the DM was already 5-8m down and in a hurry. I then descended steadily but the entire time - on 4 or 5 occasions - rather than check how my ears were and if I was okay, the DM was beckoning me to hurry up! Despite telling us we would all pause at 9m down to check everyone was okay, the DM skipped this and simply dropped like a stone to 40m. The first and most important job of a DM is surely to ensure the safety and comfort of the divers. Our DM treated us like an inconvenience from start to finish. At one stage, one guy in the group lost everyone and had to ascend. At no stage did the DM communicate to me and my friend that he was going to ascend to find this guy / take him to the surface. So - as he made a point of instructing us to beforehand - I followed him upwards as I thought we were moving to another level. And then had to come back down when I eventually realised something was wrong, which was super stressful. The entire experience was chaotic, incredibly anxiety-inducing, and just not fun. If you’re a very experienced diver who dives frequently and never has any anxieties or concerns, then you’ll probably get on alright with Back to Basics depending on who the DM is.
