From good to bad to worse to intolerable
泰美尔的点评
点评：When I first came here 35 years ago, the review would have been 5 STARS. I fell in love with Nepal. Thamel was not yet well established and many tourists stayed in the New Road area. All that has changed dramatically, especially in Thamel.

Every year I arrive, happy to be back in Nepal, and after 2 days can't wait to leave Kathmandu, especially Thamel.
Why? Traffic became a problem many years ago, so a Walking Street area throughout most of Thamel was established. It was a wonderful and much-needed change, and transformed the streets into a pleasant, safe, attractive hotel and shopping area for tourists.
Thamel is the main tourist area of Kathmandu and should be protected as such. Streets are narrow with very few sidewalks, and not intended for heavy commercial traffic and many motorcycles driving unsafely, even crazy, from morning to night.
But the COVID pandemic stopped tourism in early 2020, and therefore business. So the businessmen opened Thamel up again to traffic, setting up discos, and inviting young locals in. I think that was the most atrocious event in the downhill slide. When COVID was over in 2022, the Walking Street area was not re-established. But it is desperately needed.
Evening on the streets has become impossibly distasteful. Very loud, dangerous traffic, and thick exhaust fumes adding to the already very unhealthy AQI. Trying to go out for a nice meal hardly seems worth the trouble. And now the discos add more uncomfortable noise in some guesthouses late at night.
I fly into Kathmandu from Bangkok, spend a couple of days getting my trek set up, and then feel exhausted and disgusted enough to try and quickly leave.
