Real history to uncover, while avoiding the cats.

点评：We visited because of the fort’s historical importance. It was difficult to find out information about opening times and expectations. It appears to be open from 9am until midnight every day except Monday when it shuts at 8pm.
We took a train to Venezia Porto Marghera. The station is being refurbished and is a bit of a mess. From the station Google maps took us three sides of a square to walk to the fort- an annoying 30 minutes but it did appear that the more direct footpath was closed. Not a great walk, through decaying industrial and then bland new buildings- and we were beginning to think this was a mistake, but there was a footpath all the way.
And then suddenly there was a good footpath into the fort and it was worth going to! The original star moated structure is intact and there a a lot of historic military buildings and the odd bit of kit. It is a nice place surrounded by water and trees. It is obviously a work in progress. There is work going on refurbishing the buildings and just a few interpretation boards. There were a number of bars in some of the buildings and on a damp Thursday afternoon in late January at least two of them were open! It is supposed to be a cat sanctuary but we only saw about 10 and they kept well away.
There clearly are events at other times of the year and when the refurbishment is finished it may become a more conventional attraction. But for now it is an interesting visit for those who like things not too packaged.
