点评:We had long wanted to do the guided tour of Towton Battlefield and when the opportunity arose to take a tour on Palm Sunday, the anniversary of the battle (Palm Sunday was 29th March though in 1461) we booked tickets online.
Our guide was Chris Murphy from the Towton Battlefield Society, who did a sterling job of explaining and bringing to life the history leading up to the battle and the events during the battle itself. Catering for those who knew nothing much, to those who were well versed in Towton and its place in the wars of the Roses this is a tricky task, but Chris managed it with aplomb.
The tour itself took about two and a half hours starting with a bit of a climb but nothing too strenuous, stopping of at information boards to learn about events of the battle and indeed its impact on our history. You can do this self guided but think a guided tour is well worth the money and the ability to ask questions of a guide who can answer them and relate events in a clear and entertaining way is the way to go.
Towton was the bloodiest battle in Britain with 28,000 killed in one day, but I find is little known by the population in general. The Towton Battlefield Society is doing an excellent job of trying to correct this and relate what happened when 2 anointed kings of England came to battle.
