点评:In the beautiful countryside along the Avon and Kennet canal, sits the awesome 200 + year old Croften beam engine still performing the job it was created for, pumping water into the summit of the canal as it makes its way via locks up and over the hills. Even if you're not interested in the awsome innovation of this invention, you have to come here to appreciate the power of these amazing steam powered pumps. On steaming days you enter the boiler room where coal is shovelled in, you can also marval at the engineering magnificence of other steam engines from the same era, invented for various uses. Then you go up a floor where the awesome beams are housed, as the 6 ton (1812) or 4.5 ton (1846) beam travels up and down, the power of these things is palpable. The top floor reveals more workings, and the piston housings are something to behold. The ground floor where the deep well was dug reveals the true power of the pump, water gushes in huge volumes, and when you go outside you get a picture of the power of these things. All along your journey are the knowledgable volenteers imparting their knowledge of this incredible feat of industrial engineering. All set along the canal and later railway in the most beautiful countryside where you can grab a cuppa and cake and enjoy the scenery. The whole day was fascinating from start to finish and well worth the visit., loved every minute.
