Beautiful sunset - magnificent views across the caldera - but it does get pretty crowded

点评：I have to admit the sunset was absolutely stunning. Was it the best sunset I've ever seen in my life? No - I think that accolade would probably go to ones I experienced in Colombia, but to be fair this comes pretty close, and I think what makes it extra special are the breath-taking views across the caldera, and of course the pretty whitewashed buildings on the slopes of Oia. The negatives, of course, are the crowds. We went in May, which I gather is quiet compared to July and August, and it was still pretty crowded, so I dread to think what the crowds would be like at the height of summer. We'd been advised that the view was best from the castle ruins, but already an hour before sunset there was no space at the castle, so we settled for a space by a low wall near some extractor fans from a restaurant, the smell of which made the rest of my family feel a bit nauseous but it didn't bother me too much. You do end up occasionally having your view spoiled by other people waving their phone screens around (and I'm sure I was guilty of that too!) Also, it's a touristy area, and the shops and restaurants reflect that in their prices. I'm really glad I did it - it is a magnificent view - but I'm not sure if I'd bother again. There are lovely views of the sunset from many areas on the west side of the island, not just Oia.
