点评:I am still in 2 minds about this whole set up, and know that the founder will react badly to any negative comments. I should first say that despite my reservations it was a nice experience to see the baby turtles being released, even though about 200 people turned up on the evening that I was there. Secondly, I must state that I am not a biologist but a keen amateur with a bit of knowledge.
My first problem is that any communication was done by volunteers who clearly had very little knowledge of the turtles or the project itself. I heard them answering even basic questions with nonsense answers, so would just advise visitors to be aware of who they are talking to.
My overriding concern is about the welfare of the baby turtles who appear to be kept in large dishes from the time they hatch out until they are released up to 24 hours later. Their instinct is to try to crawl to the sea, so by the time they were released at sunset, many of them looked completely exhausted from crawling up the side of a plastic dish for hours and hours on end. Many hadn't made it to the water by the time I left.
The other basic problem is that the turtles appear to be released at the same time and at the same spot every evening, which predators will quickly learn and turn up for the nightly feast. At least the release was under cover of darkness (and with a large crowd) so there was no bird predation.
I just hope that I am wrong but the whole thing just didn't seem quite right (I'm sure the founder will let me know in a response)
