Hiroshima Peace City Monument Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims的点评
点评：Cenotaph (memorial) for the Atomic Bomb Victims – This half arch-shaped structure was designed to denote a shelter for all those who perished when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. It is designed in such a way that when that when you stand in front of the structure, you can see both the Flame of Peace and Atomic Bomb Dome. Under the center of the arch, the empty cenotaph has a registry of the known names of people killed by the bomb or from its radiation. The engraving reads "Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil”. The cenotaph is surrounded by the Peace Pond. Our guide said many of the survivors went to the rivers to quench their thirst for water. Hence, this is why the Pond of Peace was created. I learned the original design for the memorial was declined by the committee charged with reconstruction plans. Because Kenzo Tange, an architect, was the son of a Japanese man and American woman, his design was rejected. The committee felt the memorial should not be designed by a person from the country who dropped the bomb.
