点评:Expansive gardens a beautiful house and views of Sakurajima is how to best remember visiting this place. It is soaked in history and is not hard to forget with such vistas as what you can see when visiting. Sengan-en is also served directly on the regular tourist bus route from Kagoshima station (30 mins) and other tourist sites.
As one would expect the gardens are not at their prettiest in Winter although you can fully walk round them at your leisure. A map is given to you on arrival with numbered points of interest to help guide you round. This includes the traditional residence which has been done up as a museum to help showcase the living quarters of the clan that lived here and hosted many important figures throughout Sengans history. Dont expect massive amounts of information boards or display cases inside, however. All the interior is kept as traditional as possible as to enter the house you are required to remove your shoes (you can choose to by-pass this if you just want to explore the gardens however).
Definitely worth a trip more so during summer than in winter given the gardens are the mainstay of this site and naturally make up most of the site. There are a couple of shops along the walking route round together with restaurants, although I found these to be very expensive. If you are planning on visiting other Japanese gardens and aren't that interested in history on a holiday to Japan, you may want to give Sengan-en a miss.
